Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

Whether we are ready for it or not, Fall is here and we need to be prepared for the upcoming months of colder weather. September and October are perfect months to take advantage of the cooler weather and complete any Home Maintenance & Repairs needed to prevent overspending in heating, and unnecessary cost from freeze damage. Whether your a Home Owner, Real Estate Agent, Vacation Home Owner the below checklist can help avoid costly mishaps during the colder months.


  • Checks Windows & Doors for air leaks.< This can help you save on your heating bill. Weather stripping is a quick fix to majority  of these issues.
  • Clean Window Wells free of debris to ensure proper water flow avoiding any flooding in your basement.
  • Winterize outdoor irrigation. Sprinkler systems are a huge investment, protect it from the elements.
  • Have furnace serviced if needed.
  • Clean Chimney if needed.
  • Rake and remove all leaves from the yard.
  • Disconnect garden hose and ensure no water remains in it.
  • Cut back perennials.
  • At end of Fall, drain gas from lawn mower.


  • Check fire extinguisher expiration dates.
  • test garage door auto-reverse function.
  • Check water softener.
  • Check GFCI outlets.
  • Inspect and change furnace filters.
  • Inspect exterior accent lighting.


  • Service generator.
  • Flush hot water heater and remove sediment.
  • Check batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Operate the water heater relief valve and ensure water flows from overflow valve.
  • Test sump pump for proper operation.
